This has arisen from years of transferring to less-polluting renewables and natural gas. Coal fired power stations have decreased in recent years as plants have closed or switched to using biomass. In 2016 it accounted for only 9% of electricity generation.
In 2016 the government announced the aim was to phase out the last of Britain’s plants by 2025 to cut carbon emissions.
Friday 21st April 2017 was the landmark movement of the first 24 hour period without any coal powered generation. One reason for this movement is due to solar panels and wind turbines now provide much more electricity. Power demand is often lower on a Friday which also a factor.
